Donate to Goodwill and Save on Your Taxes

December 18, 2007

Individuals and families can donate gently used clothing and household items to any Goodwill retail store and receive a tax receipt. You can deduct the value of your donations (typically 25% of the items original cost) on your 2007 tax return. This is the perfect time of year to clean out your closets and make way for new items received over the holidays. You will receive a tax credit while also benefiting the local community.

Donations can be made at any of the Goodwill retail stores which are open daily and located in Springfield, Chicopee, Westfield, Palmer and Ware. Rocky’s Ace Hardware has partnered with Goodwill to accept donations at all area Rocky’s Hardware Stores on Sunday and Monday, December 30 and 31, from 9am - 4pm. Goodwill is currently preparing staff, collection bins, and trucks for the two big days. All donation sites will have Goodwill staff available to receive your donation and provide you with a tax receipt.

Donations from families and individuals in our community will help Goodwill Industries reach their Annual Appeal goal of collecting 300,000 pounds of donated goods by the end of the year. This will translate into $150,000 when those donations are sold in one of Goodwill’s local retail stores. Goodwill will also accept financial donations. Please call 413.788.6981 for more information.

Community donations of clothing or other household items begin the cycle of helping Goodwill prepare people for the workforce. Donated goods provide a means for individuals to gain valuable work experience through the process of sorting and preparing items for sale. These gently used goods supply the inventory for Goodwill’s six local retail stores which provide a valuable community service to those seeking good value for their shopping dollar. Since 1902, Goodwill has been collecting and reselling goods in order to fund job training and career services.

Goodwill provides services to individuals with a variety of disadvantaging or disabling conditions. Many of them are in need of assistance in securing a job, others need support so they can stay with their families, and still others need assistance so they can live as independently as possible.

The individuals who come to Goodwill are trained to work, and then give back to our community. Goodwill provides an in-house workforce at work centers in Springfield and Hartford, handling production contracts for area businesses. Goodwill also creates on-site work crews that are hired to help area businesses on an ongoing basis.

Goodwill’s mission is to create a better community through partnerships in employment, education and life enrichment.
